Stansted Airport Satellite 2 Fire Detection Upgrade

Fowler Martin was appointed to deliver the Stage 4 design for the fire alarm system upgrade within Stansted Airport's Satellite 2 terminal building. The project modernised the existing fire detection infrastructure, enhancing coverage, reliability and future flexibility within a live operational airport environment.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) required the upgrade of the existing fire detection system from Category L5/M to Category L1/M to improve life safety protection and support current operational requirements. The project also sought to increase system capacity, improve reliability and introduce modern detection technologies suitable for the varied environments found within the terminal building.

Our team developed a comprehensive fire alarm design tailored to the operational requirements of a busy airport facility. Working within a live environment, we carefully planned phased implementation strategies and temporary detection arrangements to ensure continuous fire alarm coverage throughout the upgrade works. We also introduced additional control and indication equipment to increase system resilience and provide capacity for future expansion.

The existing building presented several technical challenges, including extensive high-level ductwork and structural beam arrangements that restricted conventional detector positioning. Maintaining uninterrupted fire protection within an occupied airport facility was also critical. Through detailed design analysis and close coordination with stakeholders, we developed compliant detection strategies that achieved the required coverage without compromising accessibility, maintenance requirements or operational continuity.

To enhance system performance and simplify future maintenance, aspirating smoke detection technology was incorporated within high-level and difficult-to-access areas. This approach improved detection capability while reducing long-term maintenance challenges. The upgraded infrastructure also provides increased reliability, greater system flexibility and enhanced resilience for future operational requirements.

The project was delivered on time, within budget and fully in line with the client’s brief. The completed system aligns with the airport’s engineering standards, complies with BS 5839-1 Category L1 requirements and provides improved fire detection coverage, reliability and operational resilience across the terminal.
