UCL 12 Queen Square MRI Facilities

Fowler Martin provided mechanical and electrical engineering design services for the refurbishment and upgrade of two MRI suites at University College London's 12 Queen Square. The project involved delivering highly controlled environmental conditions to support specialist imaging equipment within a live healthcare and research environment.

The client required new building services infrastructure capable of maintaining precise temperature, humidity and air quality conditions essential for MRI operation. The works also needed to be carefully phased to ensure at least one MRI suite remained operational throughout the project.

We designed a specialist close-control HVAC solution incorporating dedicated air handling systems, humidification, dehumidification, cooling plant and emergency extract systems. Full BMS integration was provided to allow accurate environmental monitoring and control. Throughout the project, we worked closely with stakeholders and end users to fully understand operational requirements and minimise disruption.

Delivering specialist ventilation and cooling systems within an existing building presented significant space constraints. New air handling plant and condensers needed to be accommodated within limited plant areas, requiring the relocation of existing equipment and careful coordination of installation activities. Maintaining operational continuity for MRI services throughout the works was also a critical project requirement.

The project utilised advanced close-control air handling systems and intelligent BMS controls to optimise performance and energy efficiency. By allowing building services to respond dynamically to environmental conditions, the new system reduces unnecessary energy consumption while maintaining the stringent environmental requirements demanded by MRI facilities.

The completed MRI suites now operate within the required environmental parameters, providing reliable and consistent temperature, humidity and ventilation control. The project successfully delivered the specialist infrastructure required by the client while ensuring operational continuity, improved system performance and a high-quality environment for both patients and operators.
