Valetta Grove Library & Community Hub
Fowler Martin was appointed as MEP Designer and Principal Designer for the fit-out of the new Valetta Grove Library and Community Hub in Plaistow, London. The project forms part of a wider mixed-use development, creating a modern library and multifunctional community space for local residents.
The London Borough of Newham required the fit-out of a commercial shell space to provide a welcoming, flexible and energy-efficient library and community facility. The design needed to support a range of community activities while delivering excellent operational performance and meeting ambitious sustainability objectives.
We delivered a coordinated MEP design incorporating VRF heating and cooling systems, ducted ventilation, new lighting installations, power distribution and smart building controls. Acting as both MEP Designer and Principal Designer, we worked closely with the wider project team to ensure the new facility met the functional requirements of library users while providing an efficient and maintainable building services infrastructure.
One of the key technical challenges was coordinating the building services design with connections to the wider district heating network. Careful planning and coordination were required to integrate new systems within the base-build development while maintaining programme requirements and achieving the client’s sustainability aspirations.
The project achieved a BREEAM Excellent standard and incorporated a range of energy-saving measures, including advanced Organic Response wireless lighting controls and energy sub-metering. These technologies enable building operators to better understand and manage energy consumption while reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
The completed development provides a modern, flexible and community-focused facility that supports a wide range of public activities. The client was extremely pleased with the final result, particularly the lighting design and the building’s strong sustainability credentials. The project delivers a high-quality environment for local residents while supporting long-term operational efficiency.
