Waitrose Ruislip Decarbonisation

Fowler Martin was appointed to provide mechanical engineering design services for the decarbonisation of the Waitrose store in Ruislip. The project focused on replacing the existing gas-fired heating system with a low-carbon air source heat pump solution, supporting the client's sustainability objectives while maintaining reliable building operation.

The client sought to reduce operational carbon emissions by removing its gas heating infrastructure and transitioning to an air source heat pump (ASHP) system. The solution needed to integrate with the existing building services infrastructure, comply with environmental and planning requirements, and ensure continued performance for both customers and store operations.

Our team developed a coordinated design for a 50kW R290 air source heat pump installation, working closely with the architect and structural engineer to address structural loading, maintenance access and equipment positioning. Detailed assessments of the existing building services systems and electrical infrastructure were undertaken to ensure the new low-carbon technology could be successfully integrated into the operational store environment.

A key challenge was the use of R290 (propane) refrigerant, requiring careful consideration of safety requirements and the implementation of appropriate exclusion zones. Additional risks included noise constraints, planning compliance and the capacity of the existing electrical infrastructure. To mitigate these challenges, detailed assessments were undertaken and a load-shedding strategy was incorporated to prevent overloading during peak demand periods.

The project centred on the replacement of fossil fuel heating with renewable air source heat pump technology, significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint. The design incorporated energy-efficient controls and operational strategies to maximise performance while minimising energy consumption. Noise mitigation measures and careful equipment selection ensured the system met both environmental and operational requirements.

The project was delivered on time, within budget and fully in accordance with the client’s brief. The completed installation provides a low-carbon heating solution that supports Waitrose’s wider sustainability goals, reduces reliance on gas and creates a more resilient and future-ready building services infrastructure.
